So it’s that time of year-finals time! We’re all ready to go home and relax this summer, and we’re so over classes at this point. And yet our stinking professors make us take to prove that we learned (or pretended to learn) their material. It can be a stressful time of year, so here’s some tips to survive.
1.) BE CAREFUL WHILE MAKING POTIONS ON YOUR POTIONS FINAL. I know this seems obvious and your teachers have preached it all year, but last year some poor third year got his head practically blown off because he put ONE extra newt’s eye in the potion he was brewing

on accident. We heard the boom all over campus (most of you will remember exactly what I’m talking about). So just be careful, and don’t go all loose-limbs on us.
2.) Which comes to my next tip - keep your calm. Don’t freak out! You either know the answers or you don’t by now. No need to get all worked up about it! Just make sure you breathe in and out, and if all else fails, drink loads and loads and loads of butterbeer before the final. Maybe by then the small alcohol content in the drink will cause you to calm down. If not… good luck!
3.) Study in pairs. This is always a good idea, because sometimes you zone out (who here hasn’t daydreamed in the middle of a boring class before??) and miss important information that will be on the test. Also, you can take turns smacking each other awake when one of you falls asleep. Work out any sample problems together, and feel free to ask for a third opinion if you have disagreements on what the right answer is.
4.) Up all night studying? Well for Godric’s sake don’t do it sitting in bed. It will make you drowsy and before you know it you’ll be waking up with a bleeding wound because your Monster Book of Monsters has been wide open all night terrorizing your roommates.
5.) Speaking of roommates, respect their finals too. Don’t be loud in the room screaming in frustration if they’re sleeping. Before you all start studying, sit down and have a conversation about each of your needs during finals. Some of you might prefer to study with noise, others might. Find out who is the person who will be going to bed the earliest, and if you are someone who needs noise, move at that time down to the Common Room so as to not disturb your roommates.
6.) Make a calendar of all the due dates in your classes. This tip is really important guys. A lot of the classes have different due dates, and you don’t want to miss one because you got two mixed up! Make sure you understand when each class’s stuff is due and what is due first. If you don’t know how, don’t be afraid to ask someone for help!
7.) Don’t procrastinate! Look, I know you’ve got other things more important. It’s the last few days to hang out with friends, see Humphrey terrorizing this group of first years for the last few times, and soaking up the seventh years’ wisdom before they graduate, but take it from this fifth year who knows that procrastinating is stressful. It freaks you out, and stress is not good for you. You gain weight, you don’t feel good, you’re cranky, and no one likes to see cranky you, let’s face it. So just a bit of your work as you go. We don’t want to see you freaking out and totally lose your minds before you can graduate to your next year.
