Divergent was more of a dystopian future book similar to the Hunger Games. The main setting is in a country that is divided into factions. These factions are called Amity (for the kind and friendly), Abnegation (for the selfless), Dauntless (for the daredevils and the brave), Candor (for honesty), and Erudite (for the wise and smart).
The main character, Tris (or Beatrice) lives in Abnegation. She is very quiet and obeys the rules. But when the time comes to choose where she wants to live, she “betrays” her family and chooses Dauntless. Tris did have many options, as she is what they call Divergent, but she eventually narrowed it down to Dauntless.
Now, Tris must face the terrors of the Dauntless initiation which must be completed in order to become a member. She finds friends, enemies, and even lovers along the way. She cries and laughs through all the tough yet fun challenges of the initiation.
