by Polaris BlackIt was Valentine’s Day and Hannah smiled when she found the albino Mimbulus Mimbletonia that her husband Neville had left for her. She remembered the first time she saw him; he had been wandering around the Hogwarts Express looking for his pet toad Trevor. She never dreamed she was destined to spend her life with the shy and insecure boy that once desperately wanted to be sorted into Hufflepuff.
But in retrospect it made perfect sense. Early on, Hannah noticed that Neville shared her interest in Herbology and with Professor Sprout’s encouragement, both of them excelled. She and Neville voluntarily worked in the Greenhouses and were of invaluable help when Professor Sprout was cultivating the Mandrakes. Neville was duly impressed when Hanna recognized the birthday present from his great-uncle Algie, a rare Mimbulus Mimbletonia plant that he planned to breed.Neville wasn’t shy or insecure when it came to magical plants. Hannah left Hogwarts after her mother was murdered. Although she and Ernie Macmillan were inseparable at school, the only person she kept in contact with was Susan Bones. During that year, she and Susan became really close friends, sharing gossip and confidences. Eventually Hannah admitted that the person she was crushing on was Neville. She realized the only time she had been more miserable than seeing him with Ginny at the Yule Ball was when she saw his anguished reaction to Professor Moody’s Cruciatus Curse. And his transformation into a confident and skilled member of Dumbledore’s Army only made him more attractive to her. So Susan cheerfully kept Hannah apprised of Neville’s exploits. When she learned that attendance at Hogwarts had become mandatory for all Pure or Half-blood students, Hannah’s reaction was mixed. She went alone to Diagon Alley to purchase supplies and as she was leaving Madam Malkin’s with her new robes, she saw Neville coming out of Gringotts. He greeted her enthusiastically and suggested they get lunch at the Leaky Cauldron. They wound up talking for hours about all the difficult topics: her mother’s death, his parents torture, their fears, and their dreams. They agreed to meet and travel back to Hogwarts together. Back at school, she joined him and the resurrected Dumbledore’s Army without hesitation. Hannah had to force herself to stop reminiscing. She smiled again at the Mimbulus Mimbletonia. It was white with red pustules – bred, not dyed like some Muggle cactuses. When she touched it, it made soft crooning noises and emitted a sweet smelling sap. She knew Neville bred it especially for her for Valentine’s Day. And he would be apparating any minute now. . . |
