It was Halloween night and Sarah and her friends were out trick or treating. Although their parents said they were told old, they still loved to dress up and go out looking for candy! This year as they went around their neighborhood, door to door, they noticed something strange. Every where they looked there was a black cat. They must be fake; they all told one another, and themselves. It was probably just a silly Halloween prank.
The girls went about their business, determined to fill their bags completely up, a feat that had not yet accomplished in their years of trick or treating. As it got later, and as there became more and more cats, the girls decided they had better go back to Sarah’s house. On their way there they suddenly heard the most beautiful music. Intrigued, they began to follow it.
They didn’t notice, but the cats were following the sound of the music as well. At the edge of town the girls finally came upon the source of the music: a man dressed in all black, with fake cat ears on the top of his head. He was playing a violin, and quite well. The girls just stood and listened, as they were slowly surrounded by the cats that the music had entranced as well.
Soon enough, the man began to walk down a little dirt road none of the girls had seen before, and all of his listeners followed. At the end of the road he finally stopped playing the music. Coming to her senses, Sarah asked him who he was and what they were doing.
“Why, I am King of the Cats my lady. They follow me and love me and I take care of them,” he replied. “They all used to be children like you, but after hanging out with all of us for a while.. you start to become ‘catlike’,” he added, with a horrific laugh.
*Ring Ring Ring* Sarah shot up into a sitting position in her bed. The ringing sound that had awakened her was her phone, so she answered it. It was one of her friends, calling to tell her about a horrible dream she had had. After quickly calling the rest of her friends, Sarah realized they had all had the same dream, and that today was Halloween. On her way to school she saw a cat looking at her from the neighbors yard.
Sarah decided her parents were right. She was too old to go trick or treating. She would just stay in tonight..
